Friendship Day this Saturday
Poffetjes, herring and other Dutch treats
and entertainment will be part of this year's Canada Netherlands
Friendship Day in Burlington.
The celebration day will
be held this Saturday (May 5) starting with a flag raising
ceremony at 3 p.m. at City Hall, 426 Brant St. Festivities
will continue at the Royal Botanical Gardens Centre, 680
Plains Rd. W. Doors will be open at 5 p.m. and there is
no admission charge.
Welcome and introductions will begin
at 6:30 p.m. in the RBG auditorium. Visitors can meet vendors,
listen to jazz music from the Burlington Concert Band or
enjoy Dutch refreshments like those previously noted.
Representatives
from www.tvtravelmagazine.com will have videos about Amsterdam
and one about the communities around the IJselmeer. Visitors
can meet Glen Mitchell, author of A Bad Penny Always Comes
Back. He'll be doing an introduction, as well as book readings
on the weekend. Lisa Schuurman will also present The Reckoning
and there will be a sing-along event.
The annual friendship
day is held close to May 4, which is the official liberation
day for the Netherlands.
More than 7,000 Canadian soldiers
are buried on Dutch soil. Netherlands residents express
thanks to Canadian Armed Forces and Allied Forces for liberating
their country in 1945 near the end of the Second World
War.
